"Being mindful of all the various different aspects of support I was going to need, I knew that if I was really looking to try and fix such a wide range of problems, I had to find someone who had a diverse set of skills… "

Why did you choose a Health Coach over a Personal Trainer?

When I first started training with Matt, I had barely started walking unaided after a nasty ankle fracture.  I was paranoid that I was going to have a limp for life! In addition to needing someone to help with the mobility rehabilitation side of things, I also realised that I had spent three months of life quite literally on my backside.  Obviously, that came with its own negative health consequences, both physical and psychological.  It was shocking that I had managed to put even more weight on than before- How was that possible?!!! Being mindful of all the various different aspects of support I was going to need, I knew that if I was really looking to try and fix such a wide range of problems, I had to find someone who had a diverse set of skills…

What were your expectations?

Well, initially the main things I really wanted this person to support me with were to help me walk without a limp and lose all the extra weight that had piled on. Like a lot of other people, I had a preconceived notion of a personal trainer and other physical health experts. I thought I was going to meet someone in whose presence I would not feel comfortable being in my own skin. I was all prepared to force myself through hourly sessions in the name of good health, whilst hating every minute!
In reality...looking back at the last two years, I have been left surprised at how wrong I was! I have achieved more than the initial goals and have never had a session that I have not enjoyed no matter how hard I have had to work.

What results  have you achieved?

So…I don’t have a limp for a start.  In fact, I have now put my ankle through more challenges than before I broke it.  Along with the regular effects of losing weight, getting fitter and eating healthier, I think my biggest achievement has been of increased confidence.  This has opened so many more new doors-I have participated in fun runs, gone on adventure and heavy duty activity holidays, taken up regular yoga, re learned how to play tennis and found a new passion for the great outdoors.  In the beginning we did sessions indoors but now we have had outdoor sessions in all seasons and believe me when I say that I would never trade the experience for an indoor session ever again. It’s not even possible now for me to think about what I was missing out on before.

So, what are your future goals?

Having just completed the Jane Tomlinson Leeds 10k run under 1hr 30 mins, I am now working towards completing 10k in an hour.  Next week Matt is going to give me my first squash lesson. I have also decided to face my fear and have been taking private swimming lessons at a local pool!

What keeps you motivated?

The fact that I have made a commitment and set an appointment with Matt and I can rely on him being there on time is what keeps me motivated! The benefits of regular exercise are both short term and long term.  However, apart from the instant high I get after exercise it is hard to remember all the other long term results when I am on my way home from a hard day’s work.  All I wanted to do when I was feeling knackered and it’s dull outside was to go home and sit in front of the TV and curl up on the sofa with a cup of coffee and a biscuit or two.  The lost years through procrastination and the wasted money I spent on endless gym memberships just because I didn’t have an effective motivating factor are thankfully now HISTORY.

What was/is the hardest part of the journey?

For me it was firstly, the realisation that I couldn’t go on as I was doing.  In order to see a positive future I knew I had to make drastic changes and I wish I had come to that conclusion earlier.  After that I did my research on the internet into exactly what I needed and made a decision. The second hardest thing was to pick up the phone to book an appointment.

After that of course it’s been physically and mentally challenging to sustain this new healthy lifestyle and reach my goals but the difference between then and now is that I am not trying to do it on my own.

If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?

If you have tried to make changes to your lifestyle on your own and it hasn’t worked, then try letting someone else assume some of the responsibility.  Sharing the hard work with someone with more expertise in the field than me and who tailor makes each session for me and my specific goals has proven to be easier and much more fun. Because of this I have actually reached my targets and also gained much more rather than endlessly failing year after year.

What would you say to those thinking of calling?

I am a firm believer in thinking that it is always worth making the call, at least to be absolutely sure either way.  I can assure you that if you decide to call the number on this website you will end up meeting someone who not only has an expertise in his field but is also someone who is committed, inspiring, non-judgemental and someone who instantly puts you at ease and will also listen to you vent when you are having a bad day!
